Post-pandemic reality will fuel process orchestration adoption

The future of work is increasingly complex. Adoption of automation technology and artificial intelligence combined with the rapid changes to working patterns following the Covid-19 pandemic have created a perfect storm for change within organisations.

Out of the ashes of chaotic change, however, will rise a new landscape with its own complex challenges: new ways of working, technology advancements and increased customer demands and expectations.

Enterprise process orchestration is hailed as the solution to address those challenges, to connect multiple disparate systems and technologies, and orchestrate a new workforce of humans and technology.

Rapid change

The adoption of automation, and other intelligent automation technologies, has increased in the last year. Research firm Gartner calls the 2020 stampede towards automation “hyperautomation”.

“Hyperautomation is the idea that anything that can be automated in an organisation should be automated. Hyperautomation is driven by organisations having legacy business processes that are not streamlined, creating immensely expensive and extensive issues for organisations,” writes Gartner.

Coupled with rapid automation is a dramatic shift in working patterns. The Covid-19 pandemic forced change to working patterns and locations as the majority of employees had to work from home and juggle family life, too. Businesses, as a result, must provide more flexibility than ever before. While such changes have caused business disruption, recent shifts can also provide golden opportunity for increased productivity.

Tapping the ‘primary productivity wellspring’

MIT President L. Rafael Reif, who led the latest MIT report on the future of work which was published this month, says, “The dynamic interplay among task automation, innovation, and new work creation, while always disruptive, is a primary wellspring of rising productivity.

“Innovation improves the quantity, quality, and variety of work that a worker can accomplish in a given time.”

Analysts are hailing enterprise process orchestration as the answer to the chaos to harness new opportunities for productivity and efficiency.

A growing market

A new report by research firm, Everest Group, focuses on the benefits of enterprise process orchestration tools. The report, titled ‘Enterprise Process Orchestration: Managing the flow of work in a human+machine work environment’, predicts the market for enterprise process orchestration tools will “grow as large enterprises look to automate business processes at scale”.

Download the whitepaperThe research firm’s study on Enterprise IA Adoption Maturity within enterprises found 70% had deployed enterprise process orchestration tools to orchestrate end-to-end processes across robotic tasks, exception handling and manual tasks.

“It becomes pertinent to be able to better manage human+machine dynamics and orchestrate the flow of work across the digital and human workforce to realise greater business value from automation investments,” says the report.

“Enterprise process orchestration tools help […] by connecting multiple disparate systems and applications in one platform, while orchestrating tasks between robotic as well as human workforce to optimise workflows.”

What is Process Orchestration?

As outlined in Everest Group’s report, there are several core use cases for Enterprise Process Orchestration:

  • Process standardisation
  • Hybrid workforce management
  • Workflow automation
  • Process optimisation
  • Governance and compliance

A range of roles within an organisation can use process orchestration tools in different ways. Those roles include CoE leaders, process owners/operations managers and business analysts, with benefits such as controlling automation deployments, operational visibility and process governance, and real-time process design.
